Montpelier is the capital of the state of Vermont and the county seat of Washington County. It was settled in 1787 and named after a city in southern France.

As the capital of Vermont, Montpelier is the site of the state government. Among all the other state capitals of the US, Montpelier is the least populous with approximately 7,800 people living here.
