What is the largest seed in the world?
The largest seed in the world is that of the giant fan palm, Locoicea maldivica, commonly known as the double coconut or coco de mer. It can weigh up to 44 lbs and may take 10 years to develop. It originates from the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles Islands.
According to Bluepeace, "a single seed may be 12 inches long, nearly three feet in circumference".

The answer choice should have said coco de mer. That is not the same thing as a coconut. They are two different fruits and taste different.

billptxb, Thank you for the extra info and the memories. At this moment, as I just missed this question, I'm looking at my two coco-de-mer nuts (I never considered them "seeds," thus I missed this question and ruined a run of over 20 correct answers). I'm sure the coco-de-mer has never been threatened with extinction on Praslin, where the "tree" (the world's tallest palm) thrives in the Vallee de Mai.
