What is the most shoplifted food item in the world?
According to the statistics, cheese is the most popular one among the criminals! Raw meat goes second and everyone wonders: why so? The thing is that these items are of a mobile format so they are easy to steal & conceal. Moreover, cheese doesn't have security tags (or should we add "yet" to the sentence?).

I know whenever I steal, I normally take more cheese than anything that's why I picked cheese.
Lol! Obviously I am JOKING people before the nasty comments start. Lol

I guessed cheese, as it is fairly expensive and easy to conceal. I used to work part-time in a supermarket in the UK in the 1990s. They just started security tagging the lamb leg joints back then, as they were being stolen. I'm now in South Africa and some of the shops do have security tags on their cheese, so cheese theft must be a problem here. I haven't noticed any tags on chocolate or candy, so that's why I picked cheese.

You should add "in the US" - - many other countries DON'T HAVE security tags - - and the question includes WORLD

I worked at a quick shop for several years in the 70's and 80's. In our store it was candy. We did not sell cheese but I'm sure they'd have stolen it if we had.
I'll never forget the construction worker we caught stealing candy. I worked two jobs back then. This guy made more money in a day or so of work than I did in a month at BOTH jobs but he just had to steal that candy from us. When he was caught he whipped out a hundred dollar bill from a stack of them to pay for it.

I would disagree with this answer, if you go by the general description of shop lifting, theft of goods from an open retail establishment without paying for it (the short version). As a produce manager, the number one item I see shrink on is grapes, hundreds if not thousands of grapes are taken with out being paid for every day in the U.S.A.. In fact I would be willing that a large percentage of you have taken a grape with out paying for it. So that would make fruit the correct answer.

I would have thought fruit... Because people eat grapes as they walk through the store, cherries, things like that... They didn't have an option far bread... That would have been my second choice...

My first thought was chocolate, but I went with the one with the most protein in it

I don't know, my kids shoplift grapes all the time. We put it in our cart, my dear husband allows them to eat a few here and there, and it weighs less when the cashiers put it through. The meijer security cams have to catch it all the time, but they just don't mind. Not expensive, but definitely synonymous with shoplifting when I think about it...

I figured candy because most shoplifting is done by kids. Kids hate cheese.

Actually, the citizens of the United States have the option of accepting hand-outs of "Federal Government" cheese. Instead, of risking their livihood of getting caught shoplifting from supermarkets. It's not the best tasting cheese of choice. But it beats going to jail & developing a rap sheet in the process.
