In Colin Dann's book series, "The Animals of Farthing Wood", Tawny Owl is a male owl who makes the journey from Farthing Wood to White Deer Park. He is a dominating character who is often called Owl. In the books he in a relationship with his mate, who is simply known as Holly. Their relationship goes bad, but it ends up in a good place.

Overall Tawny Owl is a respected member of his animal group. But, at times, he acts as a very pompous and cynical creature. He is often hard on all of the other animals. For example, he often lacks the ability to show any sign of remorse whenever a member of the group dies. Despite some of his harsh actions and although he is not elected leader of the group, Tawny Owl is willing to help each member as needed. One on one, he gives aid when possible or when he is asked for help by a member.

At one point, the pompous owl has a breakdown. He leaves White Deer Park; he returns and comes back as his old self. When he returns to the group, he is with his mate Holly. She is needed by him and is seen as an asset by the entire group.
