The film "New York, New York" is a 1977 American musical film directed by Martin Scorsese. It was written by Mardik Martin and Earl Mac Rauch and was based on a story by Rauch. It is a musical tribute, featuring unknown songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb as well as some of their standard jazz songs.

The film stars Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli as a pair of musicians and lovers. The story is "...about a jazz saxophonist (De Niro) and a pop singer (Minnelli) who fall madly in love and marry". However beyond their love, De Niro as Jimmy Doyle is a "...saxophonist who has an outrageously volatile personality which places a continual strain on his relationship Minnelli as Francine Evans." Once they have a baby, their marriage crumbles, even as their careers smartly go in different directions.

With "New York, New York", it was a film that received some positive reviews from critics. But, it was still a theater box-office failure. After getting a disappointing public reception, this was a major reason that drove Scorsese into depression and drugs. Because Scorsese had directed this film, he never made another film using the musical genre format. To his credit, he has now made at least nineteen successful movies. "New York, New York" is the assuredly his only musical! He has publicly stated that he will "probably never make another musical movie."
