They have alternate leaves up to 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) long and up to 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) across. Their small flowers differ in color from white to dark purple. The fruit of the black pepper is called a drupe and when dried is known as a peppercorn.

Pepper can be grown in soil that is neither too dry nor susceptible to flooding, moist, well-drained and rich in organic matter. It's possible to grow pepper plants indoors as well. The seeds are usually sown at the end of winter inside and after the last sign of frost outside.
