What is the official language of Barbados?

Don't you think that small islands like this one are extremely attractive? Its total area is about 167 sq mi but despite being so small, this amazing island country provides its inhabitants with excellent education and the grandeur of nature as a bonus. The island has a well-developed economy. The main industries here are sugarcane cultivation and tourism but the country goes on developing many other industries/services as well.

Daniel Halley - you thought wrongly. Bajan is the usual language of the streets, but English is the official language - and, mostly, English spellings prevail over American ones.

The official language is English. The literacy rate is 99.7% which is higher than the US! And education is FREE through university!! If a tiny nation like Barbados can afford to educate its citizens, why can't the the US, the richest nation in the world?

I think you are confused. The main language of Barbados is English, as they were ruled by the British for a long time. Haiti in the Caribbean has French and Patua as their main languages as they were ruled by the French.

Sultana Frazis, Having previously had a French presence or occupation, French, French Creole and French patois are variously spoken alongside English in some of the Commonwealth Caribbean island countries, e.g. Trinidad, Grenada and Dominica but NOT in Barbados. Your teacher was clearly confused. Perhaps said teacher was the inspiration for he 1969 film 'If it's Tuesday this must be Belgium.'

English is the official language, but Barbadians speak Bajan - wonderful place, I have visited Barbados from Australia more times than I can count since 2006 - longing to go back.
