What is the proper name for a "Pit Bull"?
Pit bull is the common name for a type of dog. Although the lists of breeds often considered in North America to be of the pit bull type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and The American Bulldog, The true "Pit Bull" is The American Pit Bull Terrier
In the early 20th century pit bulls were used as catch dogs in America for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, and drive livestock, and as family companions. Due to unscrupulous breeding - many are too aggressive for their original purpose.
Always fully research the breeder and bloodline prior to purchasing one of these nobel canines.

I adopted a pit bull from the shelter. He is very loving & docile. I am 59 & wouldn't be able to handle him if he weren't because at 72 lbs he is very strong. He even lets my cat dominate him.

I've known many many MANY pits, you wouldn't even believe... and out of all those, only one was aggressive due to abuse. I've met way more aggressive animals of all other breeds... these dogs are very mean-looking, gentle dogs. And by the way.... I thought it was just "American Bull Terrier... learn something new every day....

No you are wrong. The answer is correct. A member of the molosser breed group, both the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) were bred from the same lineage, but received different names from the two American kennel clubs; American Staffordshire Terrier was the name given by the American Kennel Club (AKC),

I agree with you 100 per cent. Most "pits" are very sweet, loving dogs that love people and love to play. They are gentle and love for people to touch and pet them. The most aggressive thing I've seen is they might try to lick you to death. I love these dogs, although I probably can't have one because my place to too small.

Ray Metoyer My daughter had 3 Pits. one was a mix, Pit Bull and Doberman. When I visited he would trot across the yard to welcome me, paws on my shouldrs and look down at me and try to lick me to death. If I didn't brace myself he would have flattened me. On his hind legs he was well over 6 feet tall.
They were all very friendly and loving and PROTECTIVE. If they didn't know you, or thought you were threatening a family member, they could become agressive.

I am a senior citizen and have just adopted a pit bull that is 2 years old from the humane society and he is the most loving animal ever. He never leaves my side and I love that he sleeps at the bottom of my bed. These dogs have such a bad rap but blame it on the so called humans that made them that way.

There is no recognized pit bull breed. They come in too many cross breeds to be consistent.

I’ve seen articles that list several different AKC breeds as “Pit Bulls.” Additionally, the term Pit Bull is commonly used to classify any aggressive dog similar in appearance to those registered breeds.

I've books on this breed and you can see the difference
Pit bull should be more slender compare to the staffie bit more stocky. Got a book which you can’t get in the UK due to banning the breed. Plus how many are inbred cause I've seen lot of Staffordshire bull Terriers what look to lanky in legs.

If more than one of your selections is correct, then award all of them. According to your own explanation, Staffordshire terrier should also be counted.

George, you’re absolutely correct. I answered American Pit Bull Terrier because I’ve had many arguments with authorities concerning my dog. The reason they came up with that name is the involvement of the American kennel club. All Pit Bulls are derivatives of the British Staffordshire Terriers. Any Pit Bull bred in the US fell under the American kennel club and they renamed the dog. This title isn’t recognized by the international dog breeders association. You are correct.

Nicole Toma-Tolman, I've had issues with them and so have others yet I will agree it's all about the owner and how it's treated. They can be gotten from criminal dog fighters who treat this dog with such abuse yet they can be helped by ASPCA plus otters and retrained and given lots of love so they get thier new forever homes.
Also a note those owners teach them wrong but are not acceptable Accountable citizens..it's not the dog it's the owner..

I think they are also known as Staffordshire Terriers. You really shouldn't have two possible answers to the question.
