Produced between 1955 - 1960, the Britannia was delivered to the world's airlines at the beginning of the jet-age. It paired a large four bladed propellor to Bristol's Proteus turbine engine. The result was a large aircraft which was much quieter than earlier piston engined aircraft as well as some of the early pure jet aircraft. Due to the introduction of many variations of pure jet aircraft, the Britannia was not taken up by many air carriers and only eighty-three of the aircraft were used in airline operations.
