The Ryder Cup is a men's golf competition, lasting three days and generally held every two years, between teams from Europe (originally the UK and Ireland) and the USA, with the venue alternating between the two.

In 2012 it was held, for the first time in its history, at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois, with Davis Love III captaining the US team, and Jose Maria Olazabal the Europeans. No expense had been spared in preparing the course for the event, with a $1.5 million overhaul, including a complete redesign of the 15th hole.

To say things looked bleak for the Europeans at the start of the final day's play would be an understatement. The USA only needed four and a half points to win; the Europeans eight and a half. But not only did the Europeans win, they did so with one match still ongoing - helped, it must be said, by Tiger Woods missing a putt. He was the one to concede the victory.

Touchingly, the European captain dedicated the unlikely victory to the memory of the legendary Seve Ballesteros, who had died the previous year.

This remarkable turnaround has subsequently been known as the "Miracle of Medinah".
