The Salton Sea is a lake located on the San Andreas Fault. The salinity of the lake waters is greater than that of the Pacific Ocean! The Salton Sea is a shallow and endorheic rift lake. Salton Sea Reflection.jpg

The Salton Sea is fed by the rivers (Whitewater, Alamo and the New river), creeks, drainage systems and agricultural runoff. Originally the Salton Sea was a part of the ocean, but because of the Colorado river's delta widening this part just dried out.

Later, in 1905, the bank of the river was cut and several canals were dug by the workers of the California Development Company to increase the amount of water for irrigation. As a result, the river overwhelmed the artificial canals and flew into the Salton Basin, recreating the old lake.

A new sea, created by such a mistake, became home for a lot bird species, including the white pelicans, which are considered to be a local point of interest.
