Alabama, a southeastern state of the US, is nicknamed the Yellowhammer State. It comes from the name of the state bird, the yellowhammer. This bird is of a medium size (10 to 15 inches in height). The color of its feathers varies from gray-brown to yellow with black touches. The male ones have black mustaches.

This might be interesting: Other nicknames of Alabama are Heart of Dixie (Dixie is a corporate name for all the southeastern states) and The Cotton State.
