What symbolized the end of the Cold War?
The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 symbolized the end of the Cold War, the collapse of European Communist governments and graphically ended the Iron Curtain divide of Europe.

The old Soviet Union, which was an ally in WW2, never posed a military threat to the United States. As such, the Cold War was a totally contrived event similar to the War on Terror that replaced it. Beginning in the late 1930s (to escape the Great Depression) the economy of the United States became increasingly dependent on huge defense spending outlays that require real or imaginary enemies created when and as needed.
