What two countries border the Dead Sea?

The Dead Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 430.5 meters (1,412 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With asalinity of 342 g/kg, or 34.2%, (in 2011), it is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometers (31 mi) long and 15 kilometers (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

The Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate. Multiple canals and pipelines were proposed to reduce its recession, which had begun causing many problems. The Red Sea–Dead Sea Water Conveyance project, carried out by Jordan, will provide water to neighboring countries, while the brine will be carried to the Dead Sea to help stabilize its levels. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin in 2018 and be completed in 2021.

In the late 1940's and early 1950's, hundreds of religious documents dated between 150 BCE and 70 CE were found in caves near the ancient settlement of Qumran, about one mile (1.6 kilometers) inland from the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea (presently in the West Bank). They became known and famous as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Dead Sea is bordered by Israel and Jordan. The area that the British called Palestine was divided into Israel and Jordan. There is no country called Palestine.

I would like to see where Palestine borders the Dead Sea. Even before Israel and Jordan signed their peace agreement, the two countries and only the two countries had the sea's borders.

Mark Gavin, those others include, to my shame, the UK. Palestine was a British protectorate until the middle of last century. Sadly in 1948 it seems that little or no thought was given to a two-state solution - the Palestinians were simply told that their country was being taken to form the new state of Israel. From the viewpoint of 2021, it's impossible to imagine how they thought this could work.

Karin Johansson, So? Global warming has been going since the end of the last ice age. The question arises, has mankind accelerated the process with his activities and that has surely happened in the Jordan valley, the sea's main feeder.

prdwnelson, A ctually, the correct answer is all three, since the southernmost part of the sea does not touch the so-called West Bank. We must remember that the area gets its name from its location on the west (right) bank of the Jordan River, which flows into the Dead Sea, though how much flowage takes place now is much lower that it was in Biblical times. The traditional place of Jesus' baptism today would probably have to be done by sprinkling rather than immersion, or one might get a pretty muddy face!

Of course given the alternatives, the only answer is obviously Israel and Jordan. However, this is a "de facto" situation. According to many if not most outsiders, this is a "de jure" situation, meaning simply, that the so-called West Bank (I prefer "right bank", which it actually is) is occupied territory, Israeli settlements notwithstanding. That being the case, then there are actually 3 "countries" that border the sea - Jordan, Israel and Palestine. I have also read Holy Writ, where it says the land stretches all the way from the Euphrates to the River of Egypt. There is debate among some theological scholars whether the latter refers to the Nile or some wadi in the Sinai. In that much of this Zionist claim takes its cues from the prophets, woe to Damascus, Amman and the entire Sinai peninsula. Baghdad is safe because it's mostly on the Tigris and its left bank at that. But watch out, Cairo, you're mostly on the Nile's right bank.
