The campaign of Al Smith in 1928 immortalized on buttons a truly epic tagline that said, "Vote for Al Smith and make your wet dreams come true". This button was used because Smith was hostile to Prohibition. Accordingly, his hostility earned him recognition as a “wet,” as opponents of Prohibition (the “noble experiment”) were colloquially known. And yes, a “wet dream” meant then exactly what it does now.

But, this catchy slogan failed to help Smith win the presidential nomination. He and the entire nation had to wait five long years until the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1933 before he and others could "legally" enjoy a good drink of alcohol once again.
