Kc Furr, that's because according to American movies (pure fiction I might add ) only Americans fought in the war. Jeez we were there years before you guys. My dad served under him and all his men thought very highly of him. The world does not stop and start in America.

I met him at my school in South Africa. He was there with Douglas Bader at an armistice day celebration at the school cenotaph. Our memorial obelisk resembles the main memorial near Downing Street in London and has the names of all the School alma mater who fell in both the world wars. It is a long list and the roll is read out each year of those who gave their lives for their country. Very moving ceremony which demonstrated to me that we humans are fickle and should be more careful not to go to war even if Monty was at the meeting. I visited the memorial later in life to find some of the names of my mates who were in my classes when I was at school. All died in conflicts in Africa upholding the apartheid government. What a waste of life. The Government was soon to relinquish its role to the ANC. I was lucky that I was not balloted during my time to go to the army and therefore I was not faced with the burden that my mates at school had to go through. I did however serve with the United Nations WFP constructing runways and roads in war torn country’s in South Sudan and Mozambique and picked up lots of land mines UXO,s . So in the end I did manage to serve, but for peaceful reasons. I also lost many personnel in these ventures. Life during war is tough and the stakes of dying for nothing are high. My message ......think before you rush into war don’t be misled by heroes and hawks whoever they might be.

Kc Furr, Montgomery had risen to the top on his own merits. He was both an excellent strategist who stood up to Churchill and others, and highly respected by the soldiers in the field. I suspect he didn't care what anyone thought of him anyway; but he comes out well in the history books, and that matters more than fiction.

Irene Townsend, Britain had the whole British Empire (as it was then) amongst others such as the Greeks fighting for them. WW2 started in 1939 and the USA did not become involved until 1941 after the Pearl Harbour attack. In the meantime the USA made billions of dollars providing armaments to the allies. My father (a New Zealander) was away from home fighting in Europe and the Middle East, for more than 4 years. He was in a field hospital and only experienced “friendly fire” wounding when the Americans arrived. He felt they very poorly prepared for combat.
