The Federalist Party, formed by Alexander Hamilton, was the first American political party. It's also considered one of the first parties of all times. It existed from the early 1790s to 1816. The Federalists supported a strong national government, as well as friendly relationships with Great Britain and economic growth. The party was influential in the country until 1801, but then was supplanted by Thomas Jefferson's opposition.

John Adams, the second US president, was one of the leaders of the group and became candidate to the presidency sent by the Federalists. George Washington also shared some views with the Federalists, but remained officially non-partisan during his presidential term.

You should know: Today the United States has only two major political parties: the Democrats and the Republicans. They have a duopoly, which means these two parties share almost all the political power in the country.
