Captain Nemo is the lead character of the two novels by Jules Verne, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870) and "The Mysterious Island" (1874). In both novels he commands the fictional sophisticated submarine named the Nautilus. Verne was inspired by two real submarines: Robert Fulton's Nautilus, which gave the fictional machine its name, and Plongeur, which was studied by the writer at the 1867 Exposition Universelle.
