Romulus was the last Roman emperor in the west. In 476, the Germanic leader Odoacer staged a revolt and overthrew him to become the first Barbarian ruler of Rome. The order that the Roman Empire had brought to western Europe for 1000 years was no more.

The Roman Empire lost the strengths that made its control over the territories effective, which led to the historical event widely known as the Fall of Rome. Modern historian mention different reasons for the fall, including different economic troubles, strength and health of the population, overreliance on slave labor and the religious changes. Also the pressure from barbarians was rapidly increasing and this, of course, became one of the major reasons for the collapse of one of greatest empires of all time.
