When was the first touchscreen phone invented?
The first touchscreen phone was invented in 1993. It had no physical buttons to dial with. Initially sold for $899, the IBM cellphone replaced the usual telephone keyboard by a sensitive touch screen and integrated PIM applications and data communication features and a stylus too. The phone provided an onscreen keyboard or a QWERTY keyboard and an optional memory card too.

The question asks when it was invented, not when it was released to the public.

Ibm did invent it in 92 but took it to market in 93. And the question is touchscreen not smartphone.

The IBM Simon was the first of its kind when it came out in 1992. This phone was the 1992 version of today's I-Phone. It was touch screen, portable, had a calculator, email, and could work on networks.
