Where are the shores of Tripoli?

Tripoli is the de jure capital city and the largest city of Libya. Tripoli, with its metropolitan area, has a population of about 1.1 million people. The city is located in the northwestern part of Libya on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean and forming a bay.

Tripoli includes the Port of Tripoli and the country's largest commercial and manufacturing centre. It is also the site of the University of Tripoli. The vast Bab al-Azizia barracks, which includes the former family estate of Muammar Gaddafi, is also located in the city. Colonel Gaddafi largely ruled the country from his residence in this barracks. Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance.

The shores of Tripoli have become popular mostly due to a 1942 American Technicolor film "To the Shores of Tripoli" starring John Payne, Maureen O'Hara and Randolph Scott. Titled after a lyric in the Marines' Hymn, which contains the phrase "... to the shores of Tripoli" (which is, itself, a reference to the Battle of Derne) the film is one of the last of the pre-Pearl Harbor service films. When the film was in post-production the Pearl Harbor attack occurred having the studio shoot a new ending where Payne re-enlists.

Don't forget that there are two cities/regions named Libya: Why are there two Tripolis - one in Lebanon, and another in Libya? Ultimately it's a sheer coincidence that the two have the same name but a very interesting one at that, Tripoli (Libya) was first founded as the colony of Oea by the Phoenicians, who came from what is now within modern Lebanon. .

I’m assuming you are kidding. If not, John Payne was an actor who made over 50 movies and also some television. He was a contemporary of John Wayne, though I don’t know if they were ever in the same movie. He never reached the same stature as Wayne (though he was about as tall as Wayne, at 6’4” ) . His most remembered role was in Miracle on 34th Street.

Easy answer, as far as the Marine Corps hymn is concerned. Of course, at one time there was another Tripoli in Lebanon, but I believe that one has had its name changed.
