The Painted Desert got its name from its brilliantly colored shales, marls, and sandstone. Different colors from vivid red and blue to white and lavender can be found there. One of the most beautiful phenomena is the desert's dust storms, which are also colored purple and pink.

The desert area (some 150 miles long and 15 to 50 miles wide) is a section of the high plateau in north-central and northeast-central part of the state of Arizona in the US. The Painted Desert extends from the Grand Canyon in a southeasterly direction along the north side of the Little Colorado River to Holbrook. Its stunning and changeable landscapes of a rainbow of colors attract a lot of tourists every year.
