Where was Manzanar internment camp located?

Manzanar is most widely known as the site of one of ten camps where over 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in California's Owens Valley between the towns of Lone Pine to the south and Independence to the north, it is approximately 230 miles (370 km) northeast of Los Angeles. Manzanar (which means "apple orchard" in Spanish) was identified by the United States National Park Service as the best-preserved of the former camp sites, and is now the Manzanar National Historic Site, which preserves and interprets the legacy of Japanese American incarceration in the United States.

Warren Bell, It's a national disgrace that we actually treated American citizens that way. They were treated like criminals and enemies without benefit of due process. That's not how the system is supposed to work. It was un-American.

Mr. Miyagi knew Manzanar well. In "The Karate Kid," his character references losing his wife and son there while he was fighting for the USA in Europe. IRL, Pat Morita was interned there with his family during the war. If you have never seen "Allegiance," I urge you to find it and view it. It is based on the memoires of George Takei (Mr. Sulu of "Star Trek") when he and his family were interned. It is heartbreaking.

Another black mark on my country. That and slavery. There were also indentured servants that served for years with no pay. People forget about that. We won't even touch the subject of women as property.

Francie Carlson, There were no German POWs at Manzanar. That was our "relocation center" where we locked up American Citizens who were Japanese... after we stole everything they owned.

One of the required books in my classes was "Farewell to Manzanar." That historical period is another example of America's enslaving non-white people. Disgusting.
