The famous novel was first published on the 1st of September, 1952. This work of fiction happened to be the last published novel of the author and brought him two greatest literature awards – the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and then the Nobel Prize in 1954.

The amazing simplicity and the bitter sadness of the novel's plot made Santiago's story very popular with readers. Actually, it was based on real stories of old fishermen. In his work Hemingway described the best sides of human nature: courage, persistence, iron will, compassion and indefatigable industry.

The novel is sadly remembered as the last published work of the talented author.
