Which British monarch of the 20th century was not crowned?

Edward VIII (born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972) was King of the United Kingdom, from 20 January 1936 until 11 December 1936.

Edward abdicated (resigned) from the throne, because he wanted to marry the American Wallis Simpson. Simpson had been married twice before. As King, he was Head of the Church of England, and the Church did not support divorce. After abdicating as king, he was known as His Royal Highness the Duke of Windsor. His wife was not allowed to be called "Her Royal Highness".

Due to his abdication he never had a coronation and therefore was never crowned King of the United Kingdom.

The next in line to the throne automatically becomes the monarch after the death of the reigning monarch. The custom is the the coronation of the next monarch is not done in the year the reigning monarch dies plus it also takes months of planning and organising. During this period Edward VIII abdicated because of his love of a then married woman.

williamrlaughlin, Yes he became king upon his father's death. Hence the saying " the king is dead, long live the king" the coronation itself always takes place 1 year later (period of mourning). He abdicated just before his coronation. But he was king or he couldn't have abdicated

Steve Grant I see. So you're saying the coronation is just a ritual confirming what is already so? I always thought the coronation was necessary, without which, the ascension to the throne was not official. Thanks for your help.

So the "King/Queen is dead! Long live the King" is actually premature.Did you know that that the British crown has never gone from Queen to Queen. All of the Queens have handed off to male heirs. Elizabeth I, Victoria, and now Elisabeth II hand to a male heir.

A coronation is the ceremonial and religious recognition of the monarch, but not the legal recognition. The crown passes without a break from the dead monarch to his/her heir. A sovereign is sovereign with or without a coronation.
