Zaire, officially the Republic of Zaire was the name of a Central African state, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, between 1971 and 1997. The state's name derives from the name of the Congo River, called Zaire in Portuguese, adapted from the Kongo word nzere or nzadi ("river that swallows all rivers").

Actually it only became Zaire in the 60's I think. Before that it was just The Congo.

In 1997 General Laurent Kabila took control of Zaire and returned it to the name the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which it held prior to 1971. A new flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was also introduced to the world.

Strictly speaking, the answer given is wrong. The Democratic Republic of Congo had quite a few names prior to being renamed Zaire in 1971 - immediately before being renamed, it was also called Democratic Republic of Congo. Previous names included Belgian Congo and Congo Free State.
