India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country in the world by area. It is the most populous democracy in the world with over 1.2 billion people (2011 census). India is also the second most populous country in the world behind China (a communist nation). Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Gary Johns, being a Republic, representative or not, does NOT preclude the USA from being a democracy. After all, the modern definition of a 'democracy' is "a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives." Unless you're saying that the US is anything but.

India! They may have a democratic government, but their culture is a caste system. America is an Oligarchy or a Republic at best. I said Canada. I thought they meant the type of government and NOT population. Populous has many meanings.
