The crocodile in Africa that is rumored to have killed as many as 300 people near the Ruzizi River is Gustave. This creature is from Burundi and is known to be a large male Nile crocodile. He has become very notorious for being a man-eater and has eaten people on the banks of the Ruzizi River and the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika. It is now difficult to verify the actual number of kills, which have resulted in Gustave obtaining near mythical status from people living in Africa.

Much of what is known about Gustave stems from a film titled "Capturing the Killer Croc", which aired in 2004 on PBS. This film documents a sophisticated attempt to capture and study Gustave. Because Gustave was not captured, his exact length and weight have remained unknown. Some estimates have put Gustave at between 18 feet" (5.5 m) and 25 feet (7.5 m) long. His weigh could be more than 2,000 pounds (900 kg). In order to achieve his size and weight, he is estimated to be around 100 years old.
