The Russian composer who wrote Peter and the Wolf was Sergei Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67, is a musical written in 1936 in the Soviet Union by Prokofiev. It is a children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev), spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra.

In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theater in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. The intent was to cultivate musical tastes in children from their first years of school. Intrigued by the invitation, Prokofiev completed Peter and the Wolf in just four days. Attendance at the debut on May 2, 1936 was inauspicious at best. Some critic said that attendance was poor and failed to attract any attention. The first concert performed outside Russia was in Dublin, Ireland by the Dublin Orchestral Players under the direction of Brian Boydell on June 9, 1942.

Sergei Prokofiev born in April 1891 was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. He was and is considered one of the major composers of the 20th century. His compositions include such widely heard works as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev died at the age of 61 on March 5, 1953, the same day as Joseph Stalin.
