The Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event featuring both summer and winter sports, held every two years with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating. During Olympic Games opening ceremonies, the sitting president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make a speech before inviting a representative from the host country to officially declare that particular Games open.

Hirohito opened the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also opened the 1972 Winter Olympics held in Sapporo, Japan. Hirohito's son Akihito opened the 1998 Winter Olympics held in Nagano, Japan.

Hirohito known as the Emperor Shōwa (April 29, 1901 – January 7, 1989) was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession. He reigned from December 25, 1926, until his death on January 7, 1989. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Akihito, upon his death.

Akihito (born 23 December 1933) is the reigning Emperor of Japan. He is the 125th emperor according to Japan's traditional order of succession. Akihito succeeded his father Hirohito and acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne (the term used to identify the throne of the Emperor of Japan) on 7 January 1989.
