The French fashion house Hermès is the oldest still in operation today. The company was established by Thierry Hermès (10 January 1801 – 10 January 1878) in 1837. Initially, the brand made luxury saddles and equestrian accessories, but eventually, they shifted their focus to leather bags.

Hermès' first bag was made to hold saddles but soon they were making stylish handbags for ladies. Today their most famous bags are the Kelly (named in honor of Grace Kelly) and the Birkin (named after English actress and singer Jane Birkin).
