In 1993 designer, Christian Louboutin, frustrated after having tried different things to liven up a shoe design spontaneously grabbed his assistant's red nail polish and painted the sole of a prototype shoe. He instantly knew that this would be a success.

Since then, the red bottoms of Louboutin shoes have become an iconic status symbol. One will pay a hefty price tag for those soles, however, with Louboutins starting at $695 for a pair of signature pumps.
