Linear meters or linear meters can be the same as a meter in that they are a measurement of a single dimension or material. However, this should not be confused with square meters and lineal meters as these are significantly different measurements.

An example of a product which can be measured as a linear meter is buying fencing which is usually priced in linear meters, not square meters whereas a product such as timber flooring is normally priced in square meters.

A linear meter is a single length measurement, and a meter is also a single length measurement. Though, one square meter is an area measurement and is worked out differently to linear meters.

Terrible wording to a simple question. A meter measures dimensions and is therefore a dimensional unit of measure. The word "linear" describes anything along a line.

I have a gas meter and an electricity meter at my house. I walk metres down the street. The rest of the world understands that these are two completely different things.

A meter measures consumption, electrical, water, gas etc. A metre measures a distance.

In Australia we have a water meter, an electricity meter etc to measure consumption. A metre is a linear measurement a little over three feet (one yard) in imperial measurement.

It looks like the author is looking for a different way to state a simple question. However, the article is not making a clear statement in the first place. Lots of words are being used to make a couple of simple statements. It boils down to "a metre ... is a single lenght measurement", then It also tries to describe how a metre may also be used to describe multiple dimensions: first a single line, then the dimensions within an area, then essentially a box.

However, “meter” is also used in British English, but it means something different. A “meter” in British English is an instrument for measuring.
