Keanu Reeves was born on September 2, 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon. His father was an Asian-American geologist of Chinese and Hawaiian descent and his mother was an English showgirl. Reeves’ first name means ‘cool breeze over the mountains’ in Hawaiian.

His parents got divorced when he was only 3 years old, then Reeves and his mother moved to Australia. His natural father went to live in Hawaii where Reeves visited him until he was 13 years old after his natural father was incarcerated.

Reeves' mother married multiple times throughout his childhood. The second move was to Toronto where they attained Canadian citizenship. By 1994, they had lived in New York and Los Angeles. This made it very difficult in his youth and adjusting to change and numerous stepfathers. With this emotional instability and geographical vagrancy, he was raised by baby-sitters and grandparents, while enduring a rather traumatic upbringing.

Reeves attended several high schools and was eventually expelled. He was never very academic and often rebellious. He dropped out at the age of 17 and decided to take up acting in the movies as his career choice.

While often described as a Buddhist or atheist, including being mentioned on a "Famous Atheists" list, Reeves is irreligious and has occasionally expressed a belief in God or some other higher power. Later in life, Reeves organized a charity, choosing not to attach his name to the organization and has contributed to numerous other causes.
