Which official body was responsible for administering the Statue of Liberty between 1901 and 1933?
The U.S. Lighthouse Board administered the Statue right until 1901, then it was under protection of the Department of War (on President Theodore Roosevelt's direction).
It is an interesting fact that the Statue was NOT a gift from France to the United States. Originally, it was designed for the Suez Canal in Egypt and its basic design was not crafted specifically for the U.S.
Did you manage to recollect the history of the U.S. symbol in your memory? Please, tell us in the comments below!

This is yet another attempt to spread misinformation about the goodwill of the French. The French did give it to the American People. There was even a campaign to bring it to New York, NY.

I guess you need to correct your information. The statue initially designed for the Suez Canal was quite different and the concept was different... Mr. Bartholdi designed this monument specifically to express the friendship between United States and France.. Please seek precision before publishing such information

How the heck did this get approved? Even the wiki source given tells it was a gift from France to US. Big miss on this. Wrong info perpetuated.

Acording to Wikipedia, "The idea for the Statue of Liberty germinated in 1865 when the 31 year old French sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi [who had trained as a painter with Ary [Ari] Scheffer], and several of his friends, conceived of a monument to the Franco-American alliance of 1778 that brought General Lafayette and his French army to America to fight with Washington in our American Revolution."

I believe that is a bit of misinformation. The French certainly believe they gave it to us.

Richard S. Levine, and your disagreement is...? Lighthouse from beginning (under Cleveland) until 1901, War (under TR) until 1933, now National Park Service.

The French did give it to the U.S. There are 2 smaller "statues of liberty" in Paris, one overlooking the Seine.

Ajay Patel, wiki is too easily polluted by unverified writers. While attending college my professors would not accept wiki as a basis for documentation.

Paul Leyendecker, agreed because folk seem to have become too simply literal minded.

WRONG ANSWER!!!!
"The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was administered by the United States Lighthouse Board until 1901 and then by the Department of War; since 1933 it has been maintained by the National Park Service." -Wikipedia

I Knew That Bartoldi Was Planning A Design For A Similar-Looking Statue To Honor The Opening Of The Suez Canal, But Politics And Finances Got In The Way And It Had To Be Shelved. He "Brushed Them Off" As Time Drew Near To The United States First Centennial In 1876, (With Artisans Practically Working "Double-Time" To Make The Deadline,) But Economic Hard Times And City Scandals Delayed The Building Of The Pedestal For The Statue For about Ten Years.

kleenoslo, The reference you provided says it was a joint effort by France & the USA. The Statue is known as "Liberty Enlightening The World." It was built specifically for the placement in New York harbor. The Franc built the Statue and the Americans provide the pedestal. It wasn't a left over piece of work and placed in New York. Maybe there's another story about Egypt not wanting a statue, but it isn't the same story about the Statue standing on Liberty (Bedloe) Island.

My historical recollection was that it WAS a gift from France, paid for, in part, by pennies from French children and donors. What is the source of it NOT?

Your second paragraph is factually and historically incorrect! Why was this not caught during the review and approval of the question? The Suez Canal statue was a very different concept, and France did gift the statue to the US!
