Which one of these historic films was not an Academy Award Winner for Best Picture?

The Academy Awards for Best Picture started in the late 1920's and continue to this day. Although the number of nominees have changed over the years, the limit of nominees has recently been adjusted in 2011, to vary between five and ten.

Until 1950, the award was given to the production company; from 1951 on, the award has gone to the producer or producers of the winning film.

The description never explained WHY Star Wars never won an Academy Award, which is an interesting story. George Lucas refused to put the credits before the film, which got him into trouble with the film association. In response, Lucas quit the screenwriter's guild, which made him ineligible for the award.

So, you're correct - it is not a popularity contest. It's an award primarily decided by industry peers. Not quite convinced that's such a terrible thing. So, there are a few awards which are decided by the public, i.e., "People's Choice"; and we all know that the "people" generally get it right.....right? But, for the ticket money I spend to "attend" the Oscars, i'm just fine with the meaningless of the cheap entertainment I receive for one night every winter. And I certainly get my money's worth!
