Before the official declaration of the Father's Day in 1972, American fathers were considered not to have the same sentimental appeal as mothers did.

The first attempt to start the tradition was made in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. She was born to a family with many children. Unfortunately, the mother of the family had died. Her father was a strong and willing minded widower, who managed to raise 6 children on his own.

Sonora wanted to honor her father, whose birthday was in June. People liked the idea, and this touching family celebration became a beloved and respected American tradition.

Anyway, Richard Nixon declared the day an official holiday only decades later. Nowadays the Americans still love and value this special day of the year.
