Which was the first mass-produced computer?
In the early years of computing, computers were either one-off machines or produced in very low numbers due to their high costs and specialized construction techniques. That approach changed with the 1953 introduction of the IBM 650 computer system. The computer was officially known as the IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Data-Processing Machine and the base unit had a physical footprint about the size of a deep refrigerator. Almost 2,000 systems were produced, the last in 1962.

I used to operate an International Business Machines 650 and a Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780. I loved those virtual memory machines! Though they took a while to process large data, you could continue to enter it. Once I was calculating over 200 sheets of pricing data at once. I would just enter calculations until it would finish, then I would send the data on, check to see if any more grids had been finished, and if not, enter new calculations. The company didn't especially like how much memory I would tie up, or how much electricity I was using; but usually there was low demand for the machines and I just kept going. I would point out how many hours were being saved by doing such intense calculations in large batches.

I've heard that the computer's name in "2001: A Space Odissey" was named HAL just by movimng one letter to the left the IBM name.

Wow isn’t technology great? We now have a thousand Times more computing power in a cheap Smart Phone, than in that huge heavy contraption.
