Which was the first Western to win an Oscar?
Cimarron is a 1931 Pre-Code Western film directed by Wesley Ruggles, starring Richard Dix and Irene Dunne, and featuring Estelle Taylor and Roscoe Ates. The Oscar winning script was written by Howard Estabrook based on the Edna Ferber novel Cimarron. It was RKO's most expensive production up to that date, and its winning of the top Oscar for Best Production is also one of the few Westerns to ever win the top honor at the Academy Awards.

High Noon was nominated, but surprisingly, did not win for best picture. All the others won for best picture.

I knew it was an earlier film than the other choices given, so I went with Cimarron. My favorite western is Stagecoach, with John Wayne.

Never heard of this film. I knew High Noon and Dances won awards - the Unforgiven was a good but unsure if it won any awards. Perhaps for Supporting Actor for Hackman.

Well since I have not seen Cimarron, but I have seen High Noon which I loved, it is hard to say which one is a better movie.
