Cab Calloway is the one we can thank for a true jazz hit sold over a million copies, "Minnie the Moocher". This tune was first recorded by Cab and his orchestra in 1931 and was followed by enormous and immediate success!
Calloway was born in New York in 1907. After "Minnie the Moocher" he became a recognized and respected jazz singer and bandleader. He was one of the top entertainers of the 1930s and '40s.
Calloway died in 1994, at the age of 86 in Delaware.

I love jazz. It's also a genre that we (Americans) can be proud of since we invented it. What I've always known as "Dixie Jazz" is one of my favorite genres.

You can see him in the old "all Black cast" Hollywood movies. They are excellent repositories of Black life and cultural and musical excellence.
