The phrase "peace for our time" was spoken on September 30, 1938 by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in his speech concerning the Munich Agreement and the Anglo-German Declaration. He spoke these words in front of #10 Downing Street, London, after he arrived home from the notorious 1938 Munich Conference. Before the people in the street, Chamberlain read a statement. It said: "My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time...Go home and get a nice quiet sleep."

Prime Minister Chamberlain had pledged Britain to defend Poland's independence if Germany should attack. This alliance brought Great Britain into war when Germany attacked Poland in 1939. Chamberlain resigned the premiership in May, 1940.
