Who discovered the ruins of Troy in 1868?

One can hardly believe it but till 1868 the city was abandoned and forgotten. But the German adventurer took the risk and paid for digging in order to find the ancient city. It's a bit sad that the ruins were not completely discovered during his lifetime but he had some followers to continue the business of his life. Nowadays 9 layers of the city are identified.

This is an incorrect answer. He took credit for the discovery but the ruins were actually discovered in 1863 by a British expatriate Frank Calvert. Heinrich Schliemann showed up 5 years later with the funding for the dig. Calvert actually obtained the dig permit for Schliemann. Later, in ak his writings he never gave Calvert any credit. Questions and answers need to be accurate, not just repeating inaccurate myths from history.

He uncovered the ruins, but actually the ruins of Troy were first found by Charles McLaren in 1822. A good history trivia question though, just the same.
