"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" was a wartime speech statement made by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on August 20, 1940. Churchill apparently first used the famous words upon his exit from the Battle of Britain Bunker at RAF Uxbridge on August 16, 1940 when visiting the No. 11 Group RAF Operations Room during a day of battle. Afterwards, Churchill told Major General Hastings Ismay, "Don't speak to me, I have never been so moved". After several minutes of silence Churchill said, "Never in the history of mankind has so much been owed by so many to so few". Next, the sentence was used to form the basis of Winston Churchill's speech to the House of Commons in August 1940.

This speech was of very great inspiration to the embattled United Kingdom during the war.

Good call Brian Appleton, I got done as a receiver of a poor question something unrelated but this did tickle me how it got through - clearly a question written by an American trying to latch onto our historical coat tails

Got it by the style . Churchill worked on an oratorical ( if there is such a word) style. He developed a sort of rolling style, with repetition , rhythm, antithetical sentences and so on . It was distinctive. This small sentence reminds you of his famous speech which has sentences like: " we shall fight on the beaches , we shall fight on the landing ground...."
