By birth, Astrid was a princess of Sweden's royal House of Bernadotte. Later she became Queen consort of the Belgians as the wife of King Leopold III. Astrid was an eligible princess: a potential bride for a number of princes. Her successful suitor was Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium. The young queen was widely loved for her beauty and simplicity, so her death at the age of 29 became a national tragedy for Belgium.
