An aristocrat by birth, a bishop by chance, a minister by calling. This is all about Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754-1838), a famous French statesman and diplomat who became a legend during his own lifetime. He was a master of political and court intrigue, and was characterized by his contemporaries as an unscrupulous person who defied all moral principles.

The politician is also famous for a lot of aphorisms many of which are topical even nowadays. For example, once he said to a young diplomat who couldn't play whist (a card game) – "What a sad old age you are preparing for yourself!"
