Stendhal's birth name is Marie-Henri Beyle, however, he is better known by his pen name. It is an interesting fact that before setting on his most recognizable pseudonym, he published his works under many other pen names such as "Anastasius Serpière". Only one book was published under his real name.

"The Red and the Black" is said to be his most famous novel as in this book (as well as in many others) the writer presented the acute analysis of the characters' psychology. That's why Stendhal is considered one of the earliest practitioners of realism.
