Sue Grafton (born April 24, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky) is a contemporary American author. She started her first novel when she was 18 and finished four years later. She is best known for her series of alphabet novels are international best sellers with readership in the millions. These books are written from the perspective of a female, private investigator - Kinsey Millhone, who lives in the fictional town of Santa Teresa, CA. These novels written in recent years, take place in the 1980's. Her novels have been published in 28 countries and 26 languages.

Named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, she has also received many other honors and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America, the Ross Macdonald Literary Award, the Cartier Diamond Dagger Award from Britain’s Crime Writers’ Association, the Lifetime Achievement Award from Malice Domestic, the Anthony Award given by Bouchercon, and three Shamus Awards.

She has written "A is for Alibi" (published in 1982) all the way through "X" (published in 2015). She has two more upcoming novels in this series: "Y is for . . . " (due to be published in 2017) and "Z is for Zero" (due in 2019).
