Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by music critic Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century."

Nicknamed "Sassy", "The Divine One" and "Sailor" (for her salty speech), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989.

Sara had a long career (1942 to 1990) and produced 50 studio albums, 8 live albums, and 1 compilation album to go along with 37 singles and 6 B-sides. In 1985 Sara Vaughan received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she was inducted into the American Hall of Fame in 1988. The New York Times critic John S. Wilson said in 1957 that Vaughan possessed "what may well be the finest voice ever applied to jazz."

Sara was married three times, but was not able to bear children. She adopted a baby girl in 1961. Sara Vaughan died on April 3, 1990 while watching a television movie featuring her daughter, a week after her 66th birthday.
