Today the word 'devout" seems to mean making a show of your supposed piety. True piety is not boastful and does not exist for ego gratification. It's all so false for those who wear their faith like a badge rather than live quietly by example.

Rick Shomin "What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party? I'll tell you what they did.
Liberals got women the right to vote.
Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote.
Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly out of poverty.
Liberals ended segregation.
Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
Liberals created Medicare.
Liberals passed the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.
What did conservatives do?
They opposed them on every one of these things, every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet,"Liberal", as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it like a badge of honor." - Lawrence O'Donnell Jr.

Devout Christian? Not given the things he says politically. The guy is full of hate and lies. That is not Christian based on anything I have ever heard.

Larry W. Jones I'm not drinking anything. Try to follow along. This may be new to you, but I'm going to use facts and figures to argue with you. I hope this doesn't bring on a cognitive dissonance. Your argument shows how little you know about U.S. history and the Republican party.
First, I'm not talking political parties, I'm talking about conservatives versus liberals. That's how I got into this whole conversation to begin with, when someone used the word Liberal as if it were an insult. It certainly isn't to me. I'm proud to call myself Liberal.
Second, when the Republicans freed the slaves, theirs WAS the LIBERAL party! Over the next 150 years the party politics shifted farther and farther to the right.
Third, the Democrats also voted to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and in greater numbers than Republicans! The difference was only about 15% as far as party support, in favor of the Republicans. The act passed by a landslide with about 70% approval overall. In both the Senate and the House, 199 out of 311, or 65% of Democrats voted in favor of passing the Act and 163 out of 204, or 80% of Republicans voted to pass the act, all under the guidance of a Democratic president. Now tell me again how the Republicans passed this law and how the vote was divided along party lines? Your memory seems to include revisionist history. Either that or you are truly, VERY old and the memories are gone, now replaced by fiction.

You are a liberal because you have a heart and a conscience. American conservatives apparently have neither of those things, which is strange as so many of them claim to be 'good Christians'. They remind me of that famous Gandhi quote: "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians; they are so unlike your Christ."

Danny Powell, Chuck Norris is a hateful and lying shrew. If that is compatible with any religion you know, name the religion. I am atheist, I can hate all I want and not be a hypocrite.

Bob Alexander,
Your selective memory shows here as Republicans were the progressive party (liberals) when the KKK was started by the conservatives who were democrats at that time. The last progressive Republicans were T. Roosevelt and Taft. Wilson started the flipping of the parties by being persuaded to back the 19th Amendment (allowing women to vote). Saying “the Democrats” did this or “the Republicans” did that WITHOUT CONTEXT shows you either did not study history, or only selectively listened to things that lined up with your point of view. YOU are the one guilty of selective memory and selective semantics without proper context. Please try to be accurate next time you pull out a political sound bite.

Jim Kepler, I think the right to couple is great. It should be called a civil union, though. The term marriage should be reserved for God's intent of man and woman. When Adam asked for a partner, God gave him a woman. While biology confuses some, most are male or female.
