Ray Bolger (born Raymond Wallace Bulcao; January 10, 1904 – January 15, 1987) was an American entertainer of vaudeville and stage, actor, singer and dancer. He is best known for his outstanding portrayal of the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Actually, it was one of the first cinema contracts for Bolger, but this work finally turned out to be a great success.

It wasn't to long ago, that I saw the last of the surviving cast of the film "The Wizard of Oz" who was a "munchkin" pass away in his 90's.

I saw Ray Bolger in person at the rehearsal for the Academy Awards, hosted by Johnny Carson, back in the day. There were lots of Silver Screen-era performers in attendance that year. I kept a list so I would never forget. I was a college sophomore, studying journalism and political science, and I was sitting in the balcony of the theater with my binoculars, sharing them with an elderly couple and telling them who everybody was. They even asked if I was a drama major. It was an amazing and memorable experience for me because I had grown up in the Los Angeles area, which is the "company town" for the entertainment industry, but had never attended the event.
